Labour Party MP Rupa Huq had her whip suspended after she made alleged “racist” comments against Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. While speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Rupa commented that Kwarteng went to an expensive prep school, Eton, which made him a “superficial” black man.

The Ealing Central and Acton representative further added that those who listen to the Chancellor speaking on the Today program wouldn’t recognize that he was black. She further added that the Conservative Party had had four “superficial” brown Chancellors and similar leaders like Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch. The event Rupa was speaking at was titled “What’s Next for Labour’s Agenda on Race?”

The Chair for the event, Sunder Katwala, criticized Rupa’s “careless” comment and said that Kwarteng’s association with the Conservative Party does not take away his black identity. He also said that the Labour Party needs to be careful about the comments they make.

In retaliation, Jake Berry, chairman of the Conservative Party, wrote a letter to Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer raising concerns about Rupa’s comments, calling them racist and appalling.

Responding to Rupa’s comments, Labour Party MP and shadow foreign secretary David Lammy said that the remarks were unfortunate and that he had asked Rupa to “stand those comments down.”FAQ
