Carlton, Fremantle play out draw in AFLW

Carlton have recorded a second straight AFLW draw, tying with Fremantle in a thrilling finish.

Six days after the Blues’ 27-all draw with Port Adelaide, scores were locked again as Saturday’s game at Fremantle Oval ended 5.2 (32) each.

Fremantle forward Aine Tighe, who was the only multiple goal-kicker for the match, had a golden opportunity to secure the Dockers’ first win of the season, but kicked a behind from a set-shot following a free-kick in the dying moments.

The Dockers led by 18 points at halftime and seemed certain to break their drought this season.

But Carlton stormed home through a blitz to open the final quarter, grabbing the lead through goals to Jess Good and Breann Moody.

Carlton’s resurgence came through outstanding midfield performances from Abbie McKay and Mimi Hill.

McKay was the clear best-on-ground with 29 possessions and 10 clearances.

Emerging Blues defender Amelia Velardo sat out the rest of the match after suffering a heavy knock early in the last quarter.

Velardo, who arrived at Carlton from Collingwood ahead of this season, was brought down in a strong tackle by Dockers star Kiara Bowers.

After kicking the Blues’ first goal, veteran Blues forward Phoebe McWilliams failed to take to the field in the second-half due to a foot injury.

Carlton will travel again next weekend when they face GWS, while the Dockers will host premiership fancies Melbourne.
