High school football Week 4 live: Edgewater-Jones nail-biter tops hot games on a wet night

Lightning threatened a juicy Week 4 schedule for Orlando area teams, but the went on for almost all the scheduled games. That included the area No. 2 Edgewater at No. 3 Jones game that was again exciting despite a very soggy field.
Three games were postponed: No. 6 Lake Mary (3-0) at No. 14 Lake Brantley (2-1) to Saturday morning; and Dr. Phillips (0-3, 0-0) at Windermere High (1-2, 0-0) and Davenport (1-2, 0-0) at Liberty (0-3, 0-0) to Monday night.

The hard-hitting defense of Sanford Seminole helped the top-ranked ‘Noles cruise past the Trojans.

Junior linebacker Jordyn Perkins had 3 sacks and Seminole held Evans (0-4) to just 3 third-down conversions.
“I thought the defense played pretty well. The other team had a lot of mistakes but we did what we should do,” said Seminole coach Eric Lodge. “We still have mistakes on offense that we have to clean up, and against really good teams, those things will come back to bite us. Hopefully we get it cleaned up in practice because we have a big test next week.”
Seminole goes to Southwest Florida to play at Venice, last year’s Class 8A state champion.
Highly-touted wide receiver Darren “Goldie” Lawrence set the tone early by scoring Seminole’s first touchdown on a 7-yard direct snap. But he wasn’t the one making plays. Sophomore David Parks, a backup quarterback and receiver, had 1-yard touchdown reception and a touchdown pass.
“He’s the future. It was good that we were able to get him [Parks] in and get him some reps in a live game,” Lodge said. “We were able to evaluate what we have going forward.”
The ‘Noles made it 51-0 on a 4-yard rushing TD by Rodney Grant III as they improved to 4-0.
Seminole led 43-0 going into the fourth quarter following a 20-yard TD pass from backup Parks to WR Kenyon Holden.
It was 30-0 midway through the second quarter.

Seminole led 21-0 thanks to a 5-yard TD run by Tyrone Williams
The ‘Noles built a 14-0 lead on its second possession after a successful onside kick recovered by Lawrence. That set up a 6-yard TD run by Lawrence out of shotgun formation. ‘Noles added a two-point conversion.
Seminole scored first on a 7-yard run by Rory Thomas. A two-point conversion try failed.
Seminole senior QB Luke Rucker, a FAU commit, had completed 44 of 64 pass attempts (68.8%) before Friday night.

In addition to their lofty Super 16 rankings, was a matchup of two of the top four teams in the Class 3M (Metro) MaxPreps state power rankings. The visiting Eagles are No. 2 on that list behind reigning state champ Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Jones is No. 4.

Lakeland running back Markell Johnson rushed for three first half touchdowns and Osceola turned the ball over four times in their second consecutive loss to a state No. 1 team.
Host Lakeland (3-0) is No. 1 in the FloridaHSfootball.com Class 3S (Suburban) rankings and No. 3 according to the MaxPreps computer. Osceola (1-2) is No. 4 on both lists.
The Osceola errors were not confined to turnovers as the Kowboys turned the ball over on downs three times and had two shanked punts that covered a total of 8 yards.
Lakeland was not without its mistakes, as it turned the ball four times but Osceola could manage just 7 points off those takeaways.
The key plays came on Lakeland’s final drive, where they converted four first downs and kept the ball for all but 28 seconds of the final 6:51.
Osceola’s schedule does not get any easier, as they travel to Rockledge (3-0), the second ranked team in Suburban 3A, next week.

Osceola sophomore Taevion Swint scored on an 8-yard run to pull the Kowboys to pull the within 25-22 early in the final quarter. The Kowboys succeeded on a two-point conversion pass.
Lakeland upped its lead to 25-14 with a TD late in the third quarter.
Lakeland led 19-14 at the half.
Lakeland went back ahead 19-14 in the final minute before halftime. Markell Johnson scored on a 3-yard run for the Dreadnaughts. That came after a 51-yard pass from Zach Pkeuss to Daidre Zipperer.
Osceola went ahead 14-13 on a 43-yard pass from David Buggs to Jackson Calhoun. That followed a Lakeland fumble.
The Kowboys got on the board with a 68-yard TD pass from Buggs to Calhoun.

Lakeland took a 13-0 lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Markell Johnson, his second TD.
Dreadnaughts took a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard run by Johnson five minutes into the game.
The start of the game was delayed by lightning.
Kowboys went to fabled Bryant Stadium to renew a storied rivalry between top programs that have matched up in a scintillating string of district and playoff games since 2002.
This is their first clash since Osceola scored a 35-28 overtime playoff win in 2014.
Lakeland leads this series 9-5 since 2002. The Dreadnaughts have won six of the seven regular season matchups in that span. It is 4-4 in playoff collisions.

The Kowboys were coming off an excruciating 28-27 loss against 4M No. 1 Seminole.

This game was postponed. Now set to play Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
This is a longtime “Mayor’s Cup” rivalry game and a meaningful Class 4M District 2 opener for both teams.
They’ve played every year since 1983. Brantley leads the series 23-17 but the Rams have won seven straight and nine of the past 10 to close that gap.
Senior linebacker Gabe Nelson and ninth grader Michael McClenton are the tackle leaders with 12 stops each for a stingy Lake Mary defense.

They will face Patriots option quarterback Braxton Woodson, who is averaging 13.4 yards per carry. He has 374 yards on 28 attempts, including a 98-yard scamper.
Brantley brothers Andrew and Michael Harris are twin linebackers, both committed to sign with UCF.

Tyray Davis ran for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 carries to help the Mustangs (2-2) Mustangs prevail in a non-district game. Davis also threw for 128 yards and another score on 8-of-12 passing as Wekiva built a 25-0 lead and held on to improve to 2-2.
Terrelle Williams added 105 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Williams and the offensive line “played a big role in what we did tonight,” Davis said.
UCF commit Sincere Edwards had 4 sacks and 9 tackles for the Mustangs, who play at Lake Brantley next week. Edwards had 3 sacks in the fourth quarter.

“I told them (coaches), ‘Move me outside. I’ll bring the pressure.’ And I brought the pressure,” Williams said.
Larry Miles passed for 59 yards and a touchdown on 3-of-4 passing for West Orange in relief of junior starter Trever Jackson, who missed the game with a shoulder injury.
“Good job by Wekiva and their coaches. They just out-physicaled us,” West Orange coach Geno Thompson said. “It wasn’t a schematic thing. It wasn’t an X’s and O’s thing. It has to do with heart. We overestimated our own ability, and we got hit in the mouth. It took us a long time to respond.”

West Orange closed the gap to 25-13 on a 4-yard run by Larry Miles. Score came with a little over 10 minutes to go.
The Warriors got on the board after quarterback Larry Miles connected with Jordyn Bridgewater for a 43-yard pass on a third and long play. Miles then hit Bridgewater again on a 20-yard touchdown pass to the back of end zone. Extra point kick made it Wekiva 25, West Orange 7.

Terrelle Weathers broke through the line for a 27-yard touchdown run. That gave Wekiva a 25-0 lead midway through the third quarter.
Tyray Davis scored on a 10-yard TD run to make it 19-0.

Mustangs took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Tyray Davis finds Anthony Davis for an 18-yard touchdown pass.
West Orange spanked the Mustangs 49-3 last year to take a 7-6 lead in the rivalry. The series is now tied.
Wekiva’s losses this season were tight games against (15-14) and Lake Minneola (30-27).

Weathers comes into the game with 518 yards rushing and 5 TDs on 49 carries.
West Orange’s junior QB, Trevor Jackson (6-2, 180), suffered a shoulder injury in the opening minutes of a loss to Edgewater last week. He was not expected to play.

The Ocoee Knights (3-1) came ready to play on a rainy Friday night and gave their fans show.
Quarterback Darien Wharton was the maestro of an offense that moved and scored at will in the Class 4M District 5 opener for both teams. He threw two TD passes to receiver Asaad Waseem – including one for a 78-yard score – and ran for a score of his own.
Olympia is 2-2.

Wharton finished the game with 185 yards passing. Waseem had 136 receiving yards.
Defensive end Calvin Smith led Ocoee’s defense with 2 sacks and a recovery for a touchdown on a blocked punt. That gave the Knights a 21-0 lead just before halftime.
“Calvin is special. He came out ready to play and definitely decided that he wanted to win the game,” said Ocoee head coach Aaron Sheppard. “We had a lot of good stuff going on tonight. Hats off to my defensive coaches for that.”
Ocoee led 14-0 after a Calvin Smith touchdown.
Wharton rumbled into the end zone for a 7-0 lead for the Knights.
Olympia still leads the series 8-5 but the Knights have won the past four meetings, including a 34-13 victory last season.

Ocoee’s loss this season was a 13-12 heartbreaker against Apopka.

Hagerty (3-0) makes a case for a Sentinel Super 16 ranking with a hard-fought road victory against the Wolves of Timber Creek (2-2).
The Huskies now join Winter Park as the top contenders in Class 4M (Metro) District 3.
A botched field goal to tie the game by the home side saw Hagerty pull out their first win over the Wolves in over two years.
“In our locker room before the game, I told our kids if we can just do all of the little things that we’ve talked about, that big moment is going to happen. And that’s what happened out here tonight,” Huskies head coach Steve Mikles told the Sentinel after the game, “We finally believed in ourselves.”

After scoring their first touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter, Timber Creek went to an onside kick from kicker Alex Davis and the Wolves recovered. giving them one last shot at a tie or win. On a fourth and 2, a carry by Tre Woodson got the first down and moved the to Wolves within 30 yards of scoring. A roughing the passer penalty on Hagerty gifted 15 yards to Timber Creek with 41 seconds to go and got them into the red zone. After they couldn’t convert from 10 yards away, the field goal unit came out to attempt a game-tying field goal. The snap to the holder was botched and Wolves kicker Davis fell on the ball, turning it over as Hagerty held on to win.
Huskies players mobbed Mikles following the final whistle.
“It means a lot, especially for the program,” quarterback Anthony Benija said, “I think that we’re taking the next step in the program where we can come into these games, we can win these dogfights and we pulled it out at the end.”
Timber Creek scored with 2:36 to go in the game to cut Hagerty’s lead to 10-7. A botched punt by gave the Wolves the ball at their own 31-yard line with just under three minutes to go. On the second play of the drive, AJ Williams completed a pass to Marcus Kral for a 31-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to three points.
Before that, a roughing the passer penalty on Hagerty gave Timber Creek favorable field position on the next possession, but the Huskies’ Tyquan Reed made a big sack on Williams to push the Wolves’ offense back. A fourth down conversion by Timber Creek came up short with 4:30 left. Hagerty’s lead stayed at 10-0.
Hagerty slowly marched down the field with some runs by Anthony White and a big throw from Benzija to Ian Miller to get them into the red zone. A fourth-down conversion from Benzija to Vaughn Poorman got them within 5 yards of the end zone. On third down, a quarterback keeper by Benzija from 3 yards out broke the plane of the end zone for the first touchdown of the game with 1:33 left in the third quarter. Hagerty took a 10-0 lead.

After a squib kick to start the second half by Hagerty didn’t go to plan, Timber Creek got favorable field position at their own 40-yard line. A dart by Williams to Marcus Kral got the Wolves into Huskies territory, but another turnover by Timber Creek, this time a fumble on a rush by Alejandro Bello, turned the ball back over to Hagerty just two plays later.
At halftime Hagerty led 3-0.
After forcing a three and out, Timber Creek’s Jonathan Kamara got through the line and blocked Erwin Eberhardt’s punt, giving the ball back to the Wolves with under two minutes left in the half. On the first play, however, Timber Creek’s Williams threw his second interception on back-to-back passes, this one being picked off by Neiken Nguyen at the 18-yard line to give the ball right back to Hagerty with just over a minute to go.
On Timber Creek’s series after the INT, a healthy diet of runs by Tre Woodson on four straight plays notched a fourth down conversion right at midfield. However, on the second throw of the drive from AJ Williams, the ball was tipped and picked off by Hagerty’s Kameron Lujan to give the ball back to the visitors.
Some big running plays by Hagerty QB Anthony Benzija got Huskies into field goal range to start the second quarter. That came after a 24-yard touchdown throw to Vaughn Poorman was wiped out after a holding call on the Hagerty offensive line. Huskies settled for a 34-yard field goal by Erwin Eberhardt to take the 3-0 lead with 7:35 to go in the second quarter.

Hagerty has a chance to make a case for Super 16 attention. But more importantly, the winner joins Winter Park as the top contenders in Class 4M (Metro) District 3. This is the first of four district games for both teams.
The Wolves hammered Hagerty 42-3 in 2020 and 41-7 in 2021 and had won the past four meetings. They’ve played every year since 2011 with Timber Creek leading the series 7-5.

Freshman quarterback Sabby Meassick was a little bit under his average passing yards (323.5) for his first two varsity football games (647 yards total), but he was right on target with touchdown passes.
Meassick threw 6 TDs to 4 different receivers to bring his season total to18 TDs in three games for unbeaten Tohopekaliga (3-0). He finished 21-of-27 for 240 yards.
The early numbers are similar to former area QB standout Tucker Israel, who also started as a freshman under Tigers’ coach Anthony Paradiso when he was in charge at Lake Nona.

“It’s cool that Tucker was here watching (Meassick),” Paradiso said. “Sabby still needs to keep getting better. He’s a student of the game, but he’s got a lot of talented guys around him.”
That includes junior running back Churandy Duval, who had three TDs with two of them coming on short passes from Meassick. Duval also had an 80-yard TD run as part of 219 yards rushing on 19 carries.
Senior Nichalas Rawls II also had himself a game for Toho with 78 yards and two TDs receiving, and two interceptions on defense.
With the win, Tohopekaliga surpassed its 2021 win total (2-8).
The lone TD for St. Cloud (2-2) came on a 58-yard TD reception by Yadiel Rivera from Logan King, who finished 12-of-20 passing for 174 yards.
Meassick threw his fifth touchdown pass, to Churandy Duval, for the game’s final score.

The first rushing touchdown of the night was an 80-yard jaunt by Duval to give Tohopekaliga a 34-0 lead.
Meassick tossed a 37-yard TD pass to Nick Rawls with 2:15 to go before halftime, for a 26-0 Tohopekaliga lead.
Tigers made a defensive play with a Tre Hunter interception at the Tigers’ own 7 yard line on first play of the second quarter.
Meassick tossed his third TD pass of the night, a 25-yarder to Rawls for a 19-0 second quarter lead for Tohopekaliga.
Tohopekaliga upped its lead to 12-0 on a touchdown pass from Meassick to Churandi Duval.
Tigers jumped out in front, 6-0, on a 5-yard TD pass from Meassick to Dylan Harrel.

Tohopekaliga won its first two games 49-0 and 48-0 but this figured to be the first test for the Tigers. St. Cloud won the previous two meetings, 56-14 in Tohopekaliga’s debut season of 2018 and 12-0 in 2019.
Meassick, Tohopekaliga’s prolific freshman phenom quarterback, completed 42 of 54 pass attempts (77.8%) through his team’s first two games for 647 yards and 12 TDs. Harrell and Julian Nasco both had 11 receptions for the Tigers.
This was the Class 4S (Surban) District 10 opener for both teams.

The Wildcats (4-0) scored three second quarter touchdowns and led 28-0 at halftime.
Winter Park jumped out to a 7-0 lead four minutes into this game.
The Wildcats, ranked fourth in Class 4M (Metro) by MaxPreps, were heavy favorites in this District 3 opener.
No. 7 Lake Minneola def. East Ridge, 60-6
The host Hawks (4-0) were up 40-0 in the second quarter and cruised to victory.
It was a 4S (Suburban) District 5 opener.

East Ridge is 0-3.
Lake Minneola has won five in a row in backyard rivalry.
No. 11 Boone def. Freedom, 49-0
Boone built a 35-0 second quarter lead as it improved to 3-1 with a 4M District 4 victory.
Braves coach Andy Johnson is 6-0 against Freedom (2-2, 0-1), where he previously was head coach.
No. 13 Oviedo def. Palm Bay Heritage, 32-22.

The Lions upped their record to 3-1 with the road victory at Heritage (0-4).
This game was tied 14-14 in the first half.
Horizon def. at Poinciana, 22-6
Horizon remains undefeated at 3-0 after posting the road win against the Eagles (2-2).
The Hawks led 7-0 after one quarter and 14-6 at halftime
Horizon finished 2-8 last season. Poinciana was 1-9.

Lake Nona def. Cypress Creek, 28-0
The Lions (2-2) dealt the Bears (3-1) their first loss and improved to 8-0 in the series.
Lake Nona opened its 4M District 4 play with the win.
Host Cypress Creek was hoping to secure the first 4-0 start in program history.
Deltona def. Port Orange Atlantic, 32-13
The Wolves rallied from down 13-0 to improve to 4-0.

Deltona closed the gap to 13-12 with Jude Santana scoring on a 25-yard screen pass.
Atlantic took a 7-0 lead and upped that to 13-0 early in the second quarter.
Santana came in as the area scoring leader with 9 TDs and 66 points.
Four other area teams were attempting to remain unbeaten. They went 2-2.
The First Academy def. Orangewood Christian, 22-8
The Royals ran their record to 4-0 with the district victory against the host Rams (0-4).

Auburndale def. Kissimmee Gateway, 42-7
Gateway dropped to 1-1 with the district loss to the Bloodhounds (2-0).
Lake Highland Prep def. The Master’s Academy, 42-7
Highlanders (3-0), winners of 14 in a row dating to last season, were up 35-0 at halftime vs. Eagles (1-3).
Indian Rocks Christian def. Legacy Charter, 37-6
Indian Rocks scored 31 first quarter points to improve to 4-0 and deal Legacy (3-1) its first defeat.

Dr. Phillips (0-3, 0-0) at Windermere High (1-2, 0-0) – postponed to Monday at 7 p.m. at Scott Pine Community Park.
Davenport (1-2, 0-0) at Liberty (0-3, 0-0) – postponed to Monday, 7 p.m.
The one area Thursday night game was delayed an hour at the start before Windermere Prep (4-0) put on a record-setting showing in a 42-21 come from behind win against Riverdale Ridge (2-2) of Riverdale, Colorado.
Jackson Bennett, the Lakers’ senior football/lacrosse standout, set two school records in the win. He ran for 5 of his team’s 6 touchdowns to tie a standard set by Chris Granjean in 2014. His 259 rushing yards is also a single-game record.
Bennett (6-0, 205 pounds) has scored 15 touchdowns this season.

The Lakers were down 14-0 early but scored three times in the second quarter to take the lead in a game played at the Austin-Tindall Sports Complex.

Windermere Prep is 4-0 for the first time since its 9-1 season of 2018.
The Lakers next home game is a Friday, Oct. 7, date with Lake Highland Prep, which is 2-0 and on a 13-game winning streak going into a game against visiting Master’s Academy (1-2) tonight.
