Browns at Panthers: Live updates from Cleveland’s Week 1 game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Week 1 is finally here.

The Browns are looking to get their first win in a season opener since the 2004 season, and they will do so trying to best a familiar face, going against Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff from Bank of America Stadium is at 1 p.m EDT.

Mayfield has of course been one of the biggest stories in the NFL this offseason after the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson in March. Watson is currently serving out an 11-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after being accused of sexual misconduct by nearly 30 massage therapists.

It took a few months after the Watson trade for Mayfield to find a landing spot, but his new home came in June when the Panthers and Browns executed a trade. Suddenly Week 1 went from just another game for Cleveland to one with a few more storylines.

With Watson out, Jacoby Brissett will make his first start in a Cleveland uniform.

The Browns will need to rely heavily on their run game, led by Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Be sure to keep an eye on the offensive line as well. Right tackle Jack Conklin (knee) is inactive for this game, and James Hudson III will start in his place. The Browns are also without their backup swing tackle Chris Hubbard (elbow).

The Browns defense has a tough task in game planning for one of the most versatile players in the game in Christian McCaffrey, who missed 10 games with an injury last season but is healthy now. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah should get some opportunities in this game, given his own versatility. This game should also be a test for the safety pairing of John Johnson III and Grant Delpit.

And of course, upfront Myles Garrett has made it known he wouldn’t mind a sack or two against his former teammate.
