Joe Biden declared, “The Green New Deal is not my plan” after badgering by President Trump during Tuesday night’s presidential debate.
Biden, who has not endorsed the liberal climate platform known as the Green New Deal, instead pivoted to his own plan to address global warming, which calls for spending $2 trillion over four years to spur clean energy development.
“No, I don’t support the Green New Deal,” Biden said. “I support the Biden plan I put forward, which is different than what he calls the radical Green New Deal.”
Republicans have tried to tie Biden to the Green New Deal, a 14-page resolution co-authored by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that calls for an economic transformation to curb climate change while also addressing social issues by providing government healthcare and housing.
Biden has solicited ideas from Ocasio-Cortez and liberal counterpart Sen. Bernie Sanders, but he has not endorsed the Green New Deal, instead proposing his own plan to reach net-zero emissions across the economy by 2050 while generating carbon-free power by 2035 through an electricity standard, or mandate.
“We are going to be in a position where we can create good jobs by making sure the environment is clean and we are all in better shape,” Biden said.
Trump has not prioritized addressing climate change, viewing federal involvement to address the problem as expensive. During the debate, he instead pivoted to touting the importance of having “immaculate air and immaculate water.”
