Daniel James: Tottenham talks over Leeds winger confirmed as Fabrizio Romano names second Prem side also keen

Tottenham’s interest in signing Dan James from Leeds has been confirmed by trusted source Fabrizio Romano – but Antonio Conte’s side are not the only Premier League club looking to snare the Wales winger away from Elland Road.

Spurs have been highly active on the transfer front this summer, bringing in seven new signings. However, with just a matter of days left in the transfer window, the north London side are looking for one more addition to supplement their squad. And despite already bringing in Richarlison this summer, Conte is in the market for another attacking player.

That hunt has seen Spurs linked with deals for Nicolo Zaniolo and Hakim Ziyech. Both trails appear to have gone cold, however. Zaniolo has suffered a dislocated shoulder injury, while Chelsea are reluctant to allow a direct top-four rival to sign one of their players.

The Lilywhites, however, may have more joy if they pursue a deal for James. Their interest in the winger first emerged on Sunday, with the player having a big admirer in director Fabio Paratici.

Their interest in James has now been confirmed by Romano, who claims talks over an initial loan deal with an option to buy were held last week.

However, as Romano states, the deal will be far from easy for Tottenham to pull off. James has featured in all three games he has been eligible for this season, starting two and coming off the bench in a third.

And while his place is threatened by the signing of Luis Sinisterra, Romano suggests Leeds would prefer to keep James around.

Leeds consider options over Dan James sale

Indeed, the transfer guru claims the decision over his future will be left in the hands of the player. A move to Tottenham would be a step up and they can also offer the player Champions League football.

However, his prospects of regular football would likely be hampered moving to north London. At Leeds, he appears to be getting regular minutes; a big factor for the player. James is settled in the area, having become a father 11 months ago.

The Wales international joined Leeds in a £25m deal last summer. He scored four times and registered four assists in the Premier League for the side. However, Leeds never saw the best of James, who was asked for large periods of the season to play out of position as cover for the injured Patrick Bamford as a central striker.

Further Romano claims Tottenham are not the only side keen on a deal for James. He states that Everton are also in contact with Leeds over a potential deal.

The Toffees may be in the market for a new winger, with Antony Gordon potentially heading to Chelsea. Everton are also seemingly plotting a move for Cody Gakpo, a player whom has also been on Leeds’ radar this summer.

Hwang or Sarr could come in

As it stands, Leeds will have to consider whether to accept an offer for Dan James. The Whites are in the market for squad reinforcements themselves. As such, they could look to use his exit to further their own efforts to strengthen.

Boss Jesse Marsch is keen to bring in a new striker, with Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan among those linked. The South Korean is reportedly keen on the move, though Leeds do have a top limit on the amount they can pay.

Alternatively, Leeds may also decide to reinvestigate interest in Ismaila Sarr.

The Senegalese forward was linked with Leeds earlier this summer, before talks over a move to Aston Villa were held. Villa’s interest advanced pretty quickly, but was ultimately shelved with Steven Gerrard having second thoughts.

Were James to leave, the Whites could choose to move for the Watford man themselves.
