Anthony Gordon has told Everton and manager Frank Lampard he wants to leave to sign for Chelsea.
It is understood that Gordon, 21, wants to play Champions League football and also feels he stands a greater chance of breaking into England’s World Cup squad by playing at Stamford Bridge.
Everton have been made aware that Chelsea are ready to pay £50million plus £10million in potential add-ons.
Personal terms between Gordon and Chelsea are not expected to be a problem.
Gordon is a priority target for Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, whose side sit 12th in the Premier League table with four points from their opening three fixtures.
As it stands, a deal between the two clubs is not imminent and there remains a chance that it does not happen before the September 1 deadline.
Everton have already turned down bids from Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur for Gordon this summer.
While Everton respect Gordon’s wishes, the club know they are in a strong position because the player is under contract for another three years. An improved offer remains on the table.
After the sale of Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer, there is now also not a financial obligation to let Gordon depart and Everton have no concerns about his attitude if a move does not materialise.
There is a further reluctance on Everton’s part in that Gordon’s exit would leave them with little time to source a replacement. The club also want to invest in other positions before the deadline, such as up front, where Southampton’s Che Adams is a leading target.
Chelsea added Raheem Sterling to their attacking ranks earlier this summer but with Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner allowed to leave on respective loan and permanent deals this window Tuchel is seeking more reinforcements before the transfer deadline.
Sterling, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz have together registered just one assist in Chelsea’s opening three Premier League games.
