Glazers out? – Takeover talk ramps up at Manchester United

Manchester United transfer target Antony was absent from Ajax training on Friday – after the Red Devils had a huge bid rejected.

The Brazilian forward has emerged as Erik ten Hag’s top attacking target as he looks for a versatile addition to his line-up. After failing to progress in talks earlier this summer, the Mirror understands United submitted a fresh £67.6million offer rejected which was this week.

And with his future the subject of intense speculation, De Telegraaf report that Antony missed Ajax training on Friday ahead of their game against Utrecht on Sunday. The 22-year-old was not seen in any photos or videos from the session and the exact reason for his absence is unclear.

After scoring for Ajax at the weekend, Antony was asked about the prospect of being called by Ten Hag to join him at Old Trafford. He replied to NOS: “Will Ten Hag call me? No idea.

“He has to discuss this with my agents, I’m focused on here. What will come will come, we will see. I feel good at Ajax. I give everything for this club, every minute… so I am loving this city and this club.”

Ten Hag is known to be a huge admirer of the player, who he signed for the Dutch club from Sao Paulo in 2020. But Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder – who has replaced Ten Hag at the helm – urged his bosses to turn down the proposal from United.

The Dutch champions have seen Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez follow Ten Hag to Manchester and have also lost Sebastien Haller, Ryan Gravenberch, Perr Schuurs, Nicolas Tagliafico and Noussair Mazaroui this summer.

Schreuder warned Ajax sporting directors Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar that he could not afford to lose Antony – despite United’s bank-busting bid. Ajax have previously managed to persuade defender Jurrien Timber to turn down United’s overtures – and have now rewarded the 21-year-old with a new contract.

As revealed by Mirror Sport earlier this month, United are also monitoring PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch footballer of the year Cody Gakpo. But Eindhoven will not entertain offers for the £40million-rated forward until they have played Rangers in the second leg of their Champions League play-off.
