Braves vs. Red Sox odds, prediction: Why Atlanta is the pick

Charlie Morton #CharlieMorton

After getting roughed up by the New York Mets over the weekend, the Atlanta Braves travel to Boston to battle the Red Sox on Tuesday.

On the mound for Atlanta will be Charlie Morton (5-5, 4.09 ERA), while Boston turns to Rich Hill (4-5, 4.52 ERA). After facing the Mets’ pitching staff, things should start looking up for Braves hitters against the Red Sox.

Morton has been inconsistent but has pitched well over the past two months. In his past nine starts, Morton has allowed two runs or fewer seven times. The right-hander is coming off one of his best performances of the year as Morton allowed just three hits over 6²/₃ scoreless innings against the Phillies. Morton has a pretty large sample size versus current Red Sox hitters, holding them to a .245 average in 126 career at-bats.

Like Morton, Hill has been up and down. He’s been down in his last two outings, giving up seven runs in 7²/₃ innings. Hill doesn’t typically pitch long into games, getting through six innings just three times in 17 starts. That means the Red Sox bullpen should come into play, which isn’t a good thing. Entering Monday, Boston’s bullpen ranked second-to-last in the American League with a 4.42 ERA.

Even if Hill is on early, the Braves should get a chance to feast on the struggling Boston bullpen to get the win.

The play: Braves -125.
