Cam Smith went from being a booze and fishing-obsessed layabout living the life of a traditional outbacker in Australia to a British Open winner.

It has been a hugely successful year for the Aussie in golf, winning the 2022 Players Championship and the 2022 Open Championship, while he was also runner-up in the 2020 Masters Tournament. Most recently, at St Andrew’s, he scored five straight birdies on the back nine to claim the win.

His caddie Sam Pinfold said that the famous Queensland Maroons fighting culture is what helped Smith see off competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland to victory. “That’s the Queenslander in him; I think he drew a lot from that,” Pinfold said to Golfer’s Digest.

“He’s never really (labelled) as a favourite or as one of the big dogs. But he loves a fight. Put him three or four shots back, and he’s going to step up his game and go for it.”

Smith’s social media activity is full of golf swings, beer, and lots of fishing. In fact, the Daily Mail report that one of the first things the 28-year-old bought when he became rich as a sports star was a 39-foot fishing boat that sits docked outside his Florida home.

His mother Sharon is a grocery packer at Woolworths and his sister Melanie works in administration. Dad Des, meanwhile, is not too bad at golf and was seen crying when his son claimed victory at St Andrew’s. “Nothing surprises me anymore; he is so talented and has put so much hard work in,” Smith Senior said.

From humble beginnings, the 2022 Players Championship win saw a winner’s cheque for £4.3million, while he earned £3million for his latest victory.

It looks like the start of something special for the 28-year-old

“I lost a little bit of weight and my body moves a little bit quicker when I don’t have so much around my belly,” Smith said.

“I feel like I’m able to walk off the golf course and not be wrecked. I feel pretty fresh walking off the golf course, which is a feeling I don’t think I had for a long time.”

Though Smith may not be laying off the pints just yet, saying after his famous win: “I think two cans of beer can fit in there [Claret Jug]. I’ll probably have about 20 Claret Jugs tonight.”
