Greenwood Mall shooting leaves four dead
Police are investigating a shooting at Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana that left three dead and two injured, The Guardian reports.
A gunman with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition entered the mall’s food court on Sunday evening (July 17) and began firing.
The suspect was fatally shot by a “good Samaritan with a handgun”, Greenwood Police chief Jim Ison said.
The “good Samaritan” was identified as a 22-year-old man from Bartholomew County, although other details remain scarce at the time of writing.
“The real hero of the day is the citizen who was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began,” Jim Ison told reporters.

‘Good Samaritan’ meaning explained
The term ‘good Samaritan’ refers to someone “who voluntarily renders aid to another in distress although under no duty to do so”.
The story of the Good Samaritan was told in the New Testament parable (Luke 10:30–37). According to the parable: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.”
The story continues: “So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.”
Statement by Greenwood mayor Mark Myers
Greenwood mayor Mark Myers issued a statement shortly after the shooting asking for “prayers to the victims and our first responders”.
Myers said: “We experienced a mass shooting this evening at the Greenwood Park Mall. The Greenwood Police Department is in control of the scene. I am in direct contact with the command post, and there is no further threat. I would ask the public to please stay away from this area.”
“Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders. This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Myers said.
