You might not guess it from looking outside, but today is the first official day of fall.

That said, it’s a good reminder that rain in Houston is never limited to one season.

My socks may still be wet from taking out my dogs this morning, but here are a few good things about the first day of fall anyway:

  • Mornings are getting cooler. My dog will be thrilled that the patio door will be open in the mornings again.
  • Halloween decorations are officially acceptable. Yes, I know it’s not October yet, but we can get things started a little earlier anyway this year in the name of fall cheer.
  • Halloween candy.
  • Crunchy leaves will be here eventually. I always love the two weeks of bright orange trees we get in late fall.
  • Halloween movie marathons during gloomy days. (Today counts.)
  • You can now have a hot pumpkin spice latte, and it will make sense. It might still be 85 degrees out, but it’s still technically fall.
  • Speaking of pumpkin, grocery stores have already rolled out all their festive baked goods. I highly recommend the pumpkin doughnut holes at H-E-B and Trader Joe’s apple cider doughnuts.
  • Knowing that jeans weather is impending.
  • Yes, Houston’s first day of fall is especially damp this year, but better weather and holidays are now within sight. Stay safe today, everyone.
