Socceroos star Aaron Mooy is set to reunite with former manager Ange Postecoglou at Scottish champions Celtic, according to reports out of the UK.

The former Premier League midfielder is tipped to move to Glasgow as a free agent after negotiating a release from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port FC.

Mooy became a regular for the Socceroos during Postecoglou’s time in charge of the national team from 2013 to 2017.

The Telegraph said Mooy will knock back offers from Championship sides to sign with the Scottish juggernaut. The move would give Mooy all-important game time ahead of the World Cup in November-December.

Football reporter Mike McGrath has revealed the news on Twitter, where he’s described the deal as a “dream move” for the Australian.

“Aaron Mooy to disappoint a host of Championship clubs to secure a dream move to Celtic as a free agent,” McGrath wrote on Twitter.

“Talks have progressed for the Australia midfielder to join squad of countryman Ange Postecoglou.”

After their 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers in a friendly last weekend, Postecoglou praised Mooy, but couldn’t confirm any news about an offer.

“He’s another footballer who is very much talented and very much in my range, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to bring him in, no,” Postecoglou said after the match.

Aaron’s a fantastic footballer, somebody I know really well. I’m sure he will get picked up, he’s a very talented player

“In terms of us, we have got a plan that we are sticking to and so far I am pretty happy with the progress we are making on all fronts and hopefully there will be some news coming out before the season starts. We are going through the process and making sure we get the ones that we need.”

It was reported last week that the Australian had “plenty of interest” from clubs around the world after he left Chinese Super League powerhouse Shanghai.

While the 31-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Glasgow, Mooy’s agent Josh Barnett had revealed that other clubs were interested.

“There’s plenty of interest around the world for Aaron and we’re weighing up all the options,” Barnett told ftbl.com.au.

“There’s certainly no rush to make a decision.”

Mooy will become the latest Australian to join the famous club, who have welcomed a wealth of talent from Down Under with open arms in the past.

Former Brisbane Roar striker Scott McDonald became a fan favourite at Celtic during a famous stint at the club, which included plenty of goals.

Socceroos midfielder Tom Rogic also enjoyed a successful time at the club, but played his last game in green and white in May.

Rogic won the PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year award for the first time after what would be his final season with the Scottish champions.

Australian legend Harry Kewell has is part of the Celtic coaching staff for the upcoming season.
