Nick Kyrgios’ mum has revealed how Andy Murray helped the tennis star turn his life around.

An emotional interview on the eve of Nick’s first ever Grand Slam final against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon saw mother Nill open up about her son’s past mental health challenges.

The 27-year-old, who suffered a 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 defeat to the Serb on Sunday voiced his struggles with alcohol, drugs and self-harm back in 2019. And his mother revealed to the Sydney Morning Herald that fellow tennis star and two-time former Wimbledon winner Murray played a key role in discovering Kyrgios’ self-harm during training a few years ago.

She said: “The self-harming… I saw that and people told me that. I asked him about it and he didn’t want to talk about it at that time. John Morris (Kyrgios’s former manager) spoke to me that Andy is worried about Nick because he can see some evidence of self-harm.

“And I blame others for that. For just pressuring him, criticising him. Even people we thought might be supporting him.

“That period was very hard. I just wanted to be next to him constantly so that I could see him… And if I can’t see him I worry about him so much that it becomes very difficult.”

Nill went on to add that Kyrgios has come out of the other side of his mental struggles and is now “back” despite all the pressure and criticism he still draws from fans and the media.

She added: “When he was little we were so close. It’s nice to have him back. I’m happy for him. He’s happy and enjoying life and appreciating every little thing. It’s a good feeling.”

Kyrgios’ ascent to the Wimbledon final marks a huge achievement for the Australian when considering his past battles. Having won the 2022 Australian Open doubles tournament earlier this year, Kyrgios is currently enjoying the best spell of his career to date.
