Tottenham Hotspur’s reported pursuit of Richarlison potentially took on a dramatic new twist today with claims the London club also want Anthony Gordon but while the Brazilian might want out of Goodison Park, the Blues home-grown hero has already been firmly adamant about his own future at Everton. Sky Sports’ Alan Myers tweeted on Monday afternoon: “Tottenham Hotspur putting together a package to try and take both Richarlison and Anthony Gordon from Everton.”
If that’s the case then just what kind of combined fee should the Blues be demanding to be persuaded to do business? Given that this correspondent has argued that Goodison Park chiefs should be placing an asking price in excess of the club record £75million they received from Manchester United for Romelu Lukaku five years ago for Richarlison alone, surely any double deal to include Gordon – who Everton don’t need to sell anyway – would be running into nine figures.
Never mind talk of Harry Winks going in the opposite direction – the ECHO reported last week that the two clubs have held transfer talks over the midfielder with the player himself enthusiastic at the prospect of trying to revive his Premier League career with the Blues – you’d want them throwing in Harry Kane here! While it’s been begrudgingly accepted among wide sections of Everton’s long-suffering supporter base that this might be the summer to cash in on Richarlison if he does not want to commit himself to the club beyond his current contract that expires in 2024, in order to provide Frank Lampard with scope for rebuilding his squad, the prospect of Gordon joining him in north London seems to make little sense for all parties.

It’s no accident that Spurs owner Daniel Levy enjoys a reputation as one of football’s shrewdest deal brokers but one wonders what his club are actually trying to do here with what appears to be reverse negotiations. Certainly if they were balking at the fair market price Everton would be demanding for their prize asset and fans’ favourite Richarlison, trying to add Blues’ local lad Gordon into the mix appears a bold and potentially inflammatory tactic.
Such a double swoop would be rather different to when Tottenham beat Everton to the punch for Kyle Naughton back in 2009 when Harry Redknapp agreed at the last minute to take another prospect Kyle Walker from Sheffield United too, these are two of the Blues’ biggest players. When speaking in an exclusive interview with the ECHO back in January, Gordon – reflecting on past links with a transfer to Bayern Munich – spelled out his own thoughts on his Blues future in crystal clear terms, saying: “I’ve never wanted to leave Everton. It’s my home, I’m a Scouser and a home bird as well.
“The thought of leaving home scares me. It probably wasn’t for me and I never really considered it.”
