The prime minister’s decision to repaint the RAF plane that takes him on official business in red, white and blue will cost £900,000, Downing Street has said.

Critics called it a vanity project and a waste of taxpayer funds after the cost was disclosed. It is understood that it will be paid for by the Ministry of Defence. The grey Voyager jet, also used by the royal family, is being decorated in Cambridgeshire and is to be unveiled this month.

The prime minister’s spokesman said the makeover meant the plane “can better represent the UK . . . while retaining its military air-to-air refuelling capability”. It would need to be repainted grey to be used in combat, a defence insider noted.
