Whenever a fighter loses inside the cage, it can be considered a tough night at the office.
For Glover Teixeira, the UFC 275 main event scorecards might make the pill a bit more bitter to swallow on the heels of his loss Saturday to Jiri Prochazka. According to the official scorecard, two judges had Teixeira ahead entering the final round in which he was submitted by rear-naked choke with 28 seconds left.
The three judges who scored the contest were Ben Cartlidge, Clemens Werner and Michael Bell.
Cartlidge had Teixeira up 39-37. Werner also leaned Teixeira, too. His scorecard was 38-37 because he scored Round 4 a 10-8 in favor of Prochazka. Finally, Bell had the fight tied at 38-38 entering Round 5.
While it was never tallied, it’s possible – perhaps likely – that Teixeira was winning Round 5 prior to the finish. He stunned Prochazka early on and found success on the ground against the Czech fighter, too.
Former UFC champions Daniel Cormier and Michael Bisping, who called the fights cageside, weighed in on the outcome.
“He was ahead 1, 2, 4, and he was winning Round 5,” Cormier said. “Once again, when he goes back and he watches this, as a long-time veteran, he will see some times where he got overextended, made self-mistakes, and that ultimately is what cost him his championship.”
“Yeah, but at the end of the day, that’s why Glover Teixeira is who he is,” Bisping responded. “He could’ve coasted to a victory (in Round 5), but he didn’t want to do that. He wanted to get the finish.”
