  • Daniel Dubois came back from purdah to claim a piece of the world heavyweight championship with a thunderous knock out of America’s defender of the WBA ‘regular’ title.

Trevor Bryan was unbeaten before he came out in front of a few hundred of his fellow countrymen in probably the smallest venue in which legendary Rumble In the Jungle promoter Don King has ever stage an event.

He was gone in three rounds, one minute and 58 seconds. Rendered virtually defenceless by an onslaught of the Dubois trademark Dynamite rights, he was then frozen to stone by a left which was followed by another blast from the newest weapon in his armoury.

As Bryan was still recovering Dubois said: ‘Thank you Mr King for setting me up for the big fights ahead. Maybe Dillian Whyte first if I have to wait for Joshua, Fury and Usyk.’

That agonising loss to Joe Joyce, his only defeat, seemed light years away.

The hall was small, the crowd even smaller as Dubai came into what used to be a Jai-Alai court until this quirky venue staged this January its last game of the lightning racquet sport known as fronton in Europe.

Not that Dubois cared about the low key surroundings as he set about resurrecting his career.

Two slam-dunk knock-outs after Joyce broke his eye socket and his heart in London, Dynamite Daniel found himself fighting for a version of the world heavyweight title in Florida.

Courtesy of the WBA’s weird system of recognising two world champions, Dubois had this chance to pick up a belt which would elevate him close to the heavyweight summit.

If he needed any additional motivation, Bryan had provided it by calling him a coward for taking a knee in the tenth round of his fight with Joyce rather than jeopardise his future by taking more blows to a serious wound.

Dubois had to wait to give his response with his fists until the hymns had been sung. Not only God Save The Queen and the Star Spangled Banner but also the Ukrainian anthem in keeping with King labelling this The Fight For Freedom And Peace.

That done, Dubois went to working with a vengeance, clubbing Bryan around the ring almost at will from the opening bell. The American occasionally intervened with a cluster of jab. But it was the English left lead which landed with more shuddering effect and when Dubois land with a succession of his big rights Bryan only just made it to the end of the third round as he reeled against the ropes.

For his pain and trouble he walked into two massive lefts as he came out for the fourth. The first sent Bryan stumbling back mouth agape and arms at his side.

Dubois accepted the open invitation. The second left hook settled the argument, a glancing provide the punction mark as Ryan fell flat and was counted out.
