Volunteers needed for project June 11-18 at Joe Rowell Park

The new Dolores community garden will hold a groundbreaking on June 11 at 8 a.m. at Joe Rowell Park.

The public is invited to attend during construction to learn about the project, located between the apple orchard and the playground.

The garden will be built and managed by the Dolores Family Project. The town is providing irrigation water and space at no cost under a one-year lease agreement to be reviewed for renewal annually.

Harvests from the garden be distributed to residents in Dolores and surrounding area.

Garden construction will be June 11-18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will involve building the garden beds, fencing, mixing soil, planting and setting up irrigation.

“It is an opportunity for people to come out and learn about gardening in our climate, and how to best set up a garden at their home,” said Amber Lansing, project coordinator for the Dolores Family Project.

During the build there will be instruction about the best plants, soil health, and garden maintenance.

The public is invited to observe and learn or to volunteer for the build, Lansing said. Morning and afternoon shifts are available.

Interested volunteers should contact organizers at dolores.community.garden@gmail.com.

The Dolores Family Project operates under the Good Samaritan Project, a nonprofit food bank based in Cortez. For information, visit Good Samaritan’s Facebook page.
