Angus McNae’s best bets for Musselburgh and Listowel on Sunday

A full house of four winners last week here in the Sunday column, that will be a very hard act to follow but hope springs eternal with four more selections this week, including two at Musselburgh, who host the latest Sky Bet Sunday Series meeting.

1.55 Listowel: Congo River

This race looks a match between Congo River and Mccauleys Tavern. They met at The Curragh last time out, where Congo River proved to be marginally the better in finishing a neck in front of his rival.

That was Congo River’s debut and he is open to plenty of improvement. I think it is significant that he went off as favourite on his debut and we can infer that he is quite highly thought of. He is entered in the Group Two Railway Stakes and this should prove to be an ideal stepping stone.

3.05 Listowel: Lady Arwen

This looks to be a progressive filly and she can back up her recent success at Gowran. That win came in a fast time and a 6lb rise in the weights should not inconvenience her. She has only had four career starts and there is no doubt that she is on a steep upward curve. This is quite a competitive handicap but I rate this filly as a well-handicapped improver and at about 5-1 she has to be the play.

5.15 Musselburgh: Geremia at a general 5-1

Geremia was very unlucky last time out when finishing third at York and can make amends. He travelled strongly at York before encountering trouble in running that cost him distance and momentum.

He will need the rub of the green as he is often slowly away and held up, but in Danny Tudhope he has a jockey riding at the top of his game and I am happy to put my faith in him being able to fashion a trip from his wide draw in stall 11.

6.15 Musselburgh: Tamaska at a general 7-2

This is my idea of the best bet of the day and hopefully it will bring about another winner on the card for Tudhope.

Tamaska has won two of his past three starts and though only second at York last time out still shaped as if in good form.

He finished off that York race strongly and was only beaten a neck. In terms of a time performance it was the best of his career. He seems to be improving and from stall 1 he promises to get a good trip. Tudhope has a 22 per cent strike rate at Musselburgh and this horse can enhance that.
