Our NHL betting expert is here to offer his Oilers vs Flames predictions and picks ahead of Thursday’s game, which starts at 9:30 p.m. ET in Calgary.
It’s time for the Calgary Flames to show what they are made of or their impressive regular-season success will essentially all go for naught.
The Flames have not looked anything like that squad that claimed the Pacific Division regular-season title during their Western Conference second-round series with the Edmonton Oilers, which they trail 3-1 going into Thursday’s do-or-die affair.

Despite losing three straight games, the first with a blown lead and the last two because they can’t keep the puck out of their net, the Flames are still favored going into this home game. Take advantage of it.
Sure, the Flames are on home ice and the Oilers risk losing focus by looking forward to advancing to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2006, but that appears more wishful thinking.
Calgary erased a three-goal deficit in Game 4, a positive sign of what the team can achieve, but soon after surrendered the game-winning goal in part to the same bugaboos that have haunted them all series — poor defensive coverage and goaltending.
The Flames have done very little to instil any belief they are capable of conjuring a victory.

Scoring spree extended
Three of the four games in this series have hit over 6.5 goals. It’s a trend too hard to ignore.
The Flames are well aware they must limit the goals against — one area to help would be to stop taking so many foolish penalties — and should be capable of completing that task, but have not found a way to keep in check Edmonton’s top players.
Markstrom has floundered in goal in the past four starts, surrendering 19 goals on 138 shots, a dismal .862 save percentage.
The Oilers seemingly have the ability to score at will, or at least when needed.
Throw in the fact Calgary’s best players know they must produce in this game, and the chances of a low-scoring tilt essentially disappear.

Stars come out
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and the rest of the Oilers have run roughshod over the Flames, and likely will again.
Their out-of-this-world scoring streaks won’t go on forever, but the Flames don’t appear capable of stopping Edmonton’s dynamic duo.
McDavid is the first player in league history to record 10 multi-point games in his first 11 playoff outings — and done it in seven consecutive games, one short of the record set by Wayne Gretzky. Draisaitl, is the first player to collect three or more points in four consecutive games.
Betting on them to continue that trend can not be ignored. While McDavid’s odds to record two or more points aren’t that high (-150), the payout for Draisaitl (+130) is worth leaping at.
+130
Leon Draisaitl over 1.5 points
