A glimmer of hope for the Mets.

New York sits in first place in the National League East despite having its two best pitchers on the injured list.

Jacob deGrom started the season on the shelf with a stress reaction in his right shoulder.

Max Scherzer joined him on the injured list last week with a strained oblique.

But at least one of them might be able to return as early as next month. That’s according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman (via YardBarker):

“Somebody with the Mets told me late June. To me, that seemed optimistic,” Heyman explained about deGrom’s status. “I’m looking at July.”

MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported earlier this mont that deGrom “remains at least a month away from a return. DeGrom will require three to five Minor League rehab starts in his progression back.”

DiComo reports deGrom has begun throwing off flat ground and has been stretched out to 75 feet. DiComo called a mid-to-late June return a “best-case scenario” for deGrom, but reported July is “plausible.”

DeGrom was the National League Cy Young Award winner in 2018 and 2019. He was on his way to a third Cy Young last season before an elbow injury sent him to the injured list. As a result, he made just 15 starts in 2021.

The Mets will take the field Wednesday with an eight-game lead over the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.

New York dropped a heartbreaker Tuesday, with the San Francisco Giants rallying for a walk-off 13-12 win. Joc Pederson homered three times and drove in a career-high eight runs for the Giants. Mets closer Edwin Diaz blew a save for the third time this season.
