Thousands of Sunderland fans invade Trafalgar Square ahead of Wembley play-off final

Thousands of Sunderland fans have descended on Trafalgar Square ahead of their League One play-off final with Wycombe on Saturday.

The Black Cats have had a storied fall from grace over the past decade, but that could all be forgotten if they are promoted. And despite their tough times, Sunderland hasn’t lost its fanatical support as proven by their numbers in London.

One video shows Trafalgar Square awash in red and white as chants of ‘I’m Sunderland Til’ I Die’ ring around the square. Flares can be seen in the background, while numerous Sunderland flags have been thrown over the guardrail.

One Sunderland fan even went to extreme measures to have the chance to see his side be promoted.

James Jelly, 33, splashed out £12.50 to fly from Newcastle to Menorca, with a one night stay, before booking a flight from the island Stanstead Airport the following day for the bargain price of £10.50. “I’ll have a couple of pints and a walk around Menorca,” he joked to The Sun.

Amazingly, Jelly’s roundtrip to Spain and back will cost him less than a return train from Sunderland to Wembley.

Sunderland fans were hoping for a return to the Championship

Sunderland’s recent history isn’t great, and former hero Louis Saha has claimed the fans deserve this win.

“I’d love them to go up. I only spent six months there but it’s not right for the Football League to have such a big club in this division.” Saha told LordPing.

“They need to be back in the Premier League, but it’s getting tougher and tougher.

“I wish him the best for the game. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of the fans in Sunderland. This city is amazing and so is the way they love football. I wish them all the best.”
