BOSTON — The Red Sox trailed the Mariners 4-0 in the second inning Thursday but Trevor Story erased the deficit very quickly.
Story cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homer, then tied it 4-4 in the third inning with another two-run blast.
Story went 4-for-4 with three homers, seven RBIs, five runs, one walk and one stolen base. The Red Sox won 12-6 over the Mariners here at Fenway Park.
Story’s first homer of the night, a two-run shot, went 402 feet to center field and left his bat at 105.3 mph.
His second homer went 403 feet over the Green Monster and left his bat at 105.6 mph.
His third homer, which came in the eighth inning, traveled 358 feet to left field and had a 106.3 mph exit velocity.
Story, who signed with Boston for six years, $140 million in March, also got involved in Boston’s two-run rally in the sixth that put Boston ahead 6-4. He singled to center field with Alex Verdugo (who doubled) at second base. Verdugo scored on a throwing error by center fielder Julio Rodriguez.
Story stole third base and scored on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s two-out double.
Boston scored three runs in the seventh to make it 9-4. Two of the runs scored on bases loaded walks. The other run scored when Christian Vázquez got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Houck dominates
Red Sox starter Rich Hill lasted only 2 innings, giving up four runs, six hits (one homer) and one walk while striking out two.
Tanner Houck replaced Hill and tossed 4 scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out six.
Houck recorded nine swings-and-misses: three with his slider, three with his four-seam fastball and three with his sinker.
He was using a new grip as WEEI’s Rob Bradford tweeted photos of it prior to the game.
