Rangers get lucky as VAR doesn’t give Frankfurt ‘clear penalty’ for Connor Goldson foul

Lucky Rangers were left thanking the VAR official after Eintracht Frankfurt were denied a clear penalty for a foul by Connor Goldson in the Europa League final.

With the score finely poised at 0-0, the Gers were extremely fortuitous that Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic allowed play to continue when Goldson tripped his man in the area, with supporters on social media convinced it was an obvious spot-kick.

In the early exchanges of the second-half Frankfurt forward Rafael Borre was marshalled a little too tightly by the Rangers defender inside the box but the Colombian delayed his fall and Vincic signalled he was not going to award a penalty.

But with VAR in use, the Gers faithful faced an anxious wait to see if Goldon’s evident trip would be overturned – however it appears lady luck was on their side. Dutch official Paulus van Boekel saw no reason to countermand the original decision, leaving supporters baffled on Twitter.

“Well that was a clear penalty to Frankfurt. What’s the point of VAR??” commented one outraged fan. “That was as clear a penalty as you’ll see,” posted another.

Filip Kostic’s cross was left at the near post by the Rangers defender and vengeful Barre was on hand to turn the ball past Allan McGregor and level the scores in Seville.
