Peterborough man who controlled victim’s money and diet charged with ten domestic abuse related offences

A Cambridgeshire man who controlled his victim’s money, diet, and social life, has been charged with ten offfences related to domestic abuse. The Peterborough man was arrested in the city on Tuesday, May 10, following concerns being reported to police regarding ongoing domestic abuse.

Ben Richardson, 40, was arrested in Gunthorpe on Tuesday evening following the concerns being reported to police. This morning, May 12, he was charged with ten offences relating to domestic abuse relating to a period which happened in the span of just several months.

Richardson, of Mendip Grove, Gunthorpe, was charged with six counts of assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH), assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage to a door, and engaging in coecive or controlling behaviour. All offences related to the period between January and May this year.

The coercive and controlling behaviour was outlined as – preventing the victim from seeing her friends and family, stopping her from attending medical appointments, controlling her money, controlling waht she ate and controlling messages sent on social media.

Richardson appeared at Huntingdon Magistrates’ Court this morning, May 12, where he was remanded in prison to appear at Peterborough Crown Court on June 9. For more information about domestic abuse, including how to get help or make a report, visit Cambridgeshire Police’s website here.
