Boston Red Sox suffer fifth walkoff loss as Ryan Brasier allows ninth-inning homer to Orlando Arcia
Boston #Boston
ATLANTA — The Red Sox suffered their fifth walkoff loss this season Wednesday when Orlando Arcia bashed a two-run walkoff homer against Ryan Brasier.
The Braves won 5-3 over Boston here at Truist Park.
Ozzie Albies singled off Brasier to begin the ninth inning, then Arcia delivered the game-winner with one out.
The Red Sox dropped 11-20. They head to Texas to begin a three-game series against the Rangers starting Friday.
Cora ejected
Manager Alex Cora was ejected during the sixth inning for arguing a called third strike.
It marked Cora’s second ejection in the past four games. He also got tossed from Boston’s game against the White Sox on Saturday for arguing balls and strikes.
Cora was livid after a called third strike on Kevin Plawecki, who also got ejected for arguing.
The pitch clearly landed well below the strike zone and should have been ball four.
Home plate umpire Adam Beck’s missed call ended the sixth inning.
The Red Sox had the bases loaded with Plawecki at the plate. So a walk would have put the Red Sox ahead 4-3. Instead, the score remained 3-3.
Story hits first homer
Trevor Story finally hit his first home run as a member of the Red Sox.
He put Boston ahead 2-0 in the second inning with a 422-foot two-run home run to center field. It left his bat at 105.8 mph.
Story has above-average power and so it was surprising he went his first 25 games without a long ball. He belted 24 or more homers in every season in Colorado except for the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.
He crushed 37 homers in 2018 and 35 in 2019.
Eovaldi tosses 6 ⅓ strong innings but gives up another homer
Nathan Eovaldi tossed 6 ⅓ innings, allowing three runs, six hits and one walk while striking out six.
Eovaldi did allow a 415-foot two-run homer to Travis Demeritte during a three-run third inning.
Eovaldi is giving up too many home runs this season. He allowed 15 homers in 182 ⅓ innings last year or an average of 0.7 homers per nine innings.
He has allowed nine home runs in 40 innings this season, an average of 2.0 homers per nine innings.
