‘Gotham Knights’ Will Not Be On PS4 Or Xbox One, Releases New Gameplay

Well, it’s finally starting to happen, and major AAA games are beginning to leave the last generation of consoles behind. Gotham Knights has just announced that the game will only be released for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and will not be coming to PS4 or Xbox One “to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.”

This has generally not been an industry trend, as even games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok which many assumed would be PS5-only both have PS4 releases. The same is true for most third party AAA games so far, with only a few exceptions.

If you want to know what “next gen only” looks like, Gotham Knights has also just released a new 13 minute gameplay showcase with Red Hood and Nightwing, which shows off what each’s combat style looks like in-game.

To keep things straight, remember that Gotham Knights is not made by Rocksteady, who did the mainline Arkham games, but instead WB Games Montreal, who did Arkham Origins. Rocksteady is making the upcoming Suicide Squad game instead, which also features four playable characters in a wide city. Yeah, it’s a bit confusing.

The gameplay here looks…fine. It feels a little bit slow to me, and less balletic than Arkham combat. Granted, maybe that will change with the lighter, springier characters, Batgirl and Robin, but still, something feels just a bit off to me about this. It certainly looks great however, from a visuals perspective.

We also get a little bit more insight into the fact that unlike the Arkham series, Gotham Knights has a bit of “looter” components to it, as we see gear with different rarities and mod slots to boost your performance in combat. In the past, different Batsuits were usually just cosmetic, but that is not the case here.

Gotham Knights was recently delayed to its new release date of October 25, putting it in the always-crowded holiday window. Suicide Squad, meanwhile, has been pushed into 2023, so no, these will not be overlapping.

I am curious how this will play as a solo player, rotating across the four heroes as opposed to having a bunch of friends in combat. Or will there be matchmaking? A lot of questions for both this, and the four-player focused Suicide Squad as well, which are both diverging from the Arkham formula. Next up, Robin and Batgirl footage, no doubt.
