Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has become the first player since Steven Stamkos did it in 2011-12 to score 60 goals in an NHL season after doing so against Detroit on Tuesday evening.
The goal was his second of the night to give the Leafs a 3-0 lead.
The goal was a power-play marker at 45:49 in the game, managing to keep the puck from crossing over the blueline after getting the puck from William Nylander.
The 60-goal mark has been achieved 39 times beforehand, with Wayne Gretzky holding the single-season record of 92 set in 1981-82. Only Alex Ovechkin (65) and Stamkos (60) have done it in Matthews’ lifetime.
