Tokyo Olympics: Australia’s Riley Day narrowly misses out on reaching 200m final

It wasn’t quite Kaylee McKeown’s “f— yeah”, but fellow Aussie Riley Day let out a “holy s–t” after smashing her personal best in narrowly missing a spot in the women’s 200m final.

Day’s 22.56sec beat her 22.77 from March as a new high-water mark, with the Beaudesert product falling just short of the 22.40sec required to reach the prestigious final.

The 21-year-old was elated after finishing despite the near-miss.

“Holy s–t!” Day said on Seven after her run.

“That was a much better race than this morning. I felt my groove.

“That’s a massive PB. That’s awesome.”

MORE OLYMPICS:

Day said she hadn’t let her lack of international experience hold her back, with the youngster mixing it with Jamaican veteran and two-time Olympic sprint gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the semi.

“I don’t like to let that stop me,” she said.

“I want to be the best, and I’m going to stop at nothing to be the best.”

Day also got a giant popularity bump after dropping her Instagram handle in the Seven interview after being asked about potential sponsorship.

The sprinter’s following more than doubled from its 22,200 in barely half an hour after the interview aired.
