The Hundred: Hayley Matthews stars with bat and ball as Welsh Fire earn first win

Hayley Matthews, the young West Indies all-rounder, produced an innings of the highest class to take Welsh Fire to their first win in the women’s Hundred in Cardiff, a comprehensive nine-wicket thrashing of Manchester Originals.

The result left the Originals at the foot of the table with three defeats and a washout from their first four games, and little further scope for slip-ups.

Many of Matthews’s boundaries — and there were ten fours and a six in her unbeaten 71 from 50 balls — were strokes of immense power and timing, and they came against an Originals bowling attack containing the England players Kate Cross, Alex Hartley and Sophie Ecclestone, who was the one Originals player to have a decent all-round match.
