UPDATED: NSW records 239 new COVID-19 cases

New South Wales has met its highest daily increase in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

The state recorded 239 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday from more than 87,000 tests – the same figure the state recorded earlier this week.

At least 35 cases were infectious in the community.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said a positive was that the virus had not spread outside the eight Local Government Areas of concern.

“We don’t want to see the virus spread the further and we certainly don’t want to see whole households become infected because one person has brought virus into the home,” she told reporters.

Greater Sydney and surrounding regions are in lockdown until at least August 28, as health authorities battle to contain the outbreak of the virulent Delta strain.
