White Sox acquire second baseman Cesar Hernandez from Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The White Sox are acquiring second baseman Cesar Hernandez from the Indians, a source confirmed Thursday.
The Sox have been looking for an upgrade at the position after Nick Madrigal went down for the season with a hamstring injury. Leury Garcia and Danny Mendick have been filling the role. The deal, which hasn’t been announced, comes a day before the trade deadline.
A 32-year-old switch hitter who won a Gold Glove at second base in 2020, Hernandez is batting .231/.307/.431 with a career high home runs. He owns a career .272/.347/.388 hitting line.
“Our front office has been busy. He’s one of the guys they’ve been talking about,” manager Tony La Russa said.
“It’s clear the front office is doing what they can to get us better.”
The Sox are expected to give up Class-AA left-hander Connor Pilkington, who owns a 3.48 ERA over 62 innings pitched this season. Pilkington was not a Sox top 30 prospect, per MLB Pipeline.
The Sox play the Indians this weekend at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Sox are also looking to improve their bullpen before the deadline.
