Adam Ottavino blows save vs. former Yankees team, Boston Red Sox lose stunner despite Nathan Eovaldi’s dominant outing

BOSTON — The Red Sox were cruising vs. the Yankees here Saturday. Nathan Eovaldi put on a strike-throwing clinic. He threw 82% strikes.

He left with Boston ahead 3-1 after 7 ⅔ innings and left a runner at first base.

Former Yankees reliever Adam Ottavino replaced him and couldn’t hold the lead. The Yankees scored four runs in the eighth to win 4-3 over the Red Sox here at Fenway Park.

Giancarlo Stanton blooped a ground-rule double into right field that dropped out of the reach of Franchy Cordero and bounced into the stands. Rougned Odor crushed a two-run double to tie the game 3-3.

Gleyber Torres then put New York ahead 4-3 with a 72.8 mph bloop single that fell in front of Cordero.

Boston threatens in ninth

Hunter Renfroe walked and Christian Vázquez hit a bloop ground-rule double to right field to put two runners in scoring position with two outs in the ninth.

But Kiké Hernández struck out swinging against Aroldis Chapman to end the game.

Eovaldi throws 82% strikes

Eovaldi threw 100 pitches (82 strikes). All 11 pitches he threw in the seventh landed for strikes.

He allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out eight.

Yankees starter Jameson Taillon went 7 innings, allowing three runs (one earned), four hits and three walks while striking out four.

How the Red Sox scored

Kiké Hernández led off the bottom of the first inning with a 403-foot triple to left-center field. He advanced home on an errant throw to third, making it 1-0 Boston.

Boston jumped ahead 2-0 in the second on Kevin Plawecki’s RBI double.

Jarren Duran used his speed to help the Red Sox manufacture their third run, which came in the third inning. Duran grounded to second baseman Rougned Odor who made an error. The ball went into shallow center field and Duran made it to second base.

Duran advanced to third base on Xander Bogaerts’ groundout, then scored on Rafael Devers’ sac fly to center field.

Series finale Sunday

The Red Sox and Yankees will wrap up their four-game series at 1:10 p.m. Sunday. Lefty Martín Pérez (7-6, 4.16 ERA) will start for Boston opposite New York righty Domingo Germán (4-5, 4.71 ERA).
