Six hurt after man dressed up as Spider-Man attacks staff in Asda

Five people have been arrested after staff at a London supermarket were attacked on Thursday night.

Video footage shows a man wearing a Spider-Man outfit kicking a female member of staff in the face, then punching her to the ground and battering others with a long, metal object.

One woman in her 20s was taken to hospital following the incident at Asda Clapham Junction, with a further five treated at the scene by medics from the London Ambulance service.

A person lying defenceless on the floor is repeatedly smacked in the face during the carnage, which shows customers shouting and screaming at around 10.40pm.

It is unclear if security guards were involved or why the fighting began.

Posting a video of the footage on Twitter, one social media user wrote: ‘Asda Clapham Junction. A bunch a thugs attacking colleagues, elderly and children absolutely disgusting.’

They added that those involved had ‘dressed up as superhero’s only to attack innocent people’.

The footage also shows an elderly man holding his head and glasses while lying on the floor of one aisle.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told Metro.co.uk that a 31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, affray and violent disorder; while another two men, aged 37 and 35, were arrested on suspicion of affray and violent disorder.

He added that two teenage woman, aged 17 and 18, had also been arrested on suspicion of affray and violent disorder.

The spokesman added: ‘Police were called at 10.40pm on Thursday, 22 July to reports of a group of people involved in a disturbance at a supermarket on Lavender Hill, SW11.

‘Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service. A woman in her 20s was taken to hospital with a minor injury. A further five people were treated at the scene.

‘Five people were arrested in connection with the incident. They remain in custody at a south London police station.’

A spokesperson for Asda added: ‘We are aware of an incident which occurred at our Clapham Junction store late last night.

‘We do not tolerate any form of violence or abuse towards colleague or customers and we are working closely with the police in their enquiries.’’
