Bruce McAvaney returns for his 11th Olympic Games broadcast, however, he admits it might just be his last as a caller.
Australia’s most loved and respected sports broadcaster, McAvaney and his honeyed tones have been iconic when it comes to the Olympics.
Asked whether the Tokyo Games could be his last ever live call he replied, “Yes, it is”.
“It’s not something I’ve sort of thought about, but in response to your question, absolutely,” McAvaney said on SEN’s Whateley.
“I don’t call horse racing anymore and I’m not calling AFL, it could well be the last time that I call anything.
“I hope that it’s not, but three years is a long time away … maybe on that last day I might reflect a bit more than I am right now.”
Following the announcement that Brisbane has been officially named as the host of the 2032 Olympic Games in a huge sporting coup for the country, McAvaney admits that it might be stretch to think that he would be calling those games.
“Three years is a long way away and Seven don’t have the rights to Paris at this stage and then I don’t want to think about 2032 and 2028,” he laughed.
“But yeah, it might be the last time I ever call anything of such.”
