Richard Madeley and Kate step in after John Simpson swears ‘Apologise for anyone offended’

John told the show about the time he was a victim to a mock execution in Beirut and he described what he thought were his last moments.

“Of course, [my last thoughts] ought to have been my family, wife, children, grandchildren, all of these things,” John said. 

“Actually, what happened as I knelt down there, sandy ground, few fag ends on the ground, somebody had spat there and I just looked sat the ground and thought ‘I can’t believe this is how it ends. I can’t believe this is the last thing I’m going to see.’ 

“Actually, it wasn’t but I assumed at the time, I was handing in my lunch pay, that was it.”
