Canadiens’ Shea Weber: Career may be over

Weber (ankle) is expected to miss the upcoming season and has likely played his last NHL game. General manager Marc Bergevin told reporters, “Even missing a practice for him wasn’t an option. He has a lot of mileage…He won’t be back next season, and probably won’t be back for his career,” Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports.

If Weber is in fact unable to continue playing, then he figures to spend the next five seasons on long-term injured reserve for the Canadiens. This would give the club the ability to exceed the cap by $7.8 million annually unless it opts to trade Weber’s contract to another team. If this does mark the end of the four-time All-Star’s NHL career, he will retire having appeared in 1038 games for Nashville and Montreal in which he racked up 224 goals and 365 assists, including 239 power-play points.
