Readers’ poll: Should the Proms drop Land of Hope and Glory?
Proms #Proms
The Last Night of the Proms is traditionally marked by the singing of Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. Now the BBC Proms artistic team is considering dropping these songs from the programme.
Those who want to end the tradition argue the songs’ association with colonialism and slavery means they are no longer appropriate for such an occasion. Others say they are legitimate expressions of patriotism and a potent symbol of our national life.
