The ultimate Laura Tingle tribute

Laura Tingle #LauraTingle

She’s already a Canberra icon, reporting on politics for 40 years. Now you can buy the Laura Tingle T-shirt. And coffee cup. And phone case. And poster. And tote bag … Brisbane artist Nordacious – aka James Hiller – this week unveiled a range of products featuring Tingle’s visage – in withering interview mode – with the caption “100 per cent over your shit”. Which sums up everything, really. We’d really like to see federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg holding a Tingle coffee cup at the next budget. The Back in Black one is so 2019. When we approached Tingle for a reaction, she was, as usual, already ahead of the game, pointing out she has long been on various products, thanks to Sydney artist Alex Godwin at Parliament House of Cards. Those items, including tea-towels, coffee cups, T-shirts and hoodies, feature “Laura Tingle is not having any of your shit”. Again, word. There may be a theme developing here. Tingle was a fan of Godwin’s work. “She even made a special tote bag for my 90-year-old mum saying, ‘Laura Tingle is not putting up with any of your nonsense’, because mum thought the generic message wasn’t very ladylike,” Tingle told us on Friday. “I’m a bit nonplussed, to be honest. But it is all very funny. And we all have to support small business.” The artist Nordacious, meanwhile, said he created the image of Tingle only on Thursday and by Friday morning already had sales. “I use a third party vendor so I can create all the artwork at home or wherever. As long as I’ve got a computer and internet connection, I can make it happen,” he said. Nordacious wanted to capture that “eviscerating stare” that Tingle employed while interviewing politicians or reporting on the latest policy stuff-up on 7.30. “I love that she’s got the reins of 7.30 at the moment. I’ll always watch when she’s on,” he said. Nordacious says he used to dabble more in pop culture, but his political work was hitting the mark in these pandemic times. “If I do anything political looking at it through quite a critical lens, it goes off like wildfire,” he said. “It’s obviously resonating with how people are feeling.”
