Mildura has a positive Covid case for the first time in 465 days with Victoria’s outbreak making it to the far northwest.

A man in his 30s in Mildura has tested positive to Covid, ending the municipality’s 465-day run without a confirmed case.

Health officials said he presented to Mildura Base Public Hospital on Saturday night and later returned a positive result.

Covid commander Jeroen Weimar said the case was a man in his 30s who went to the Carlton-Geelong MCG football game exposure site.

Mr Weimar said it was understood the man was in the MCC reserve on level 2 and was one of three household members who went to the game.

“All I know about the Mildura case this morning is that his positive result came through in the early hours of this morning,” Mr Weimar said.

“He presented to the emergency room at (the) Mildura hospital, he’s currently in the care of those clinicians.

“We’ve also put in place protocols at the hospital to ensure the safeguarding of other staff and people in that hospital.

It was possible exposure sites related to the man’s movements could be announced soon.

Mr Weimar said interviews with the man were continuing.

“My understanding at this point is he was part of a group of three household members who travelled to the game,” Mr Weimar said.

“I don’t have his travel details about when he travelled up, when he travelled back and how he travelled.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said he understood the man was a Mildura local and not somebody from Melbourne who travelled to Mildura.

“That just confirms for all of us, if we need any, that this thing moves quick, and if it’s a problem anywhere, it’s a problem everywhere,” Mr Andrews said.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton urged anyone with symptoms to get tested and for Victorians to check exposure sites daily.

Victoria announced 16 new cases on Sunday.
