The drama is in the air.
The Nashville Flyers made a big splash on Saturday, sending veteran defenseman Ryan Ellis to Philadelphia for defenseman Philippe Myers and forward Nolan Patrick. The Preds then sent Patrick to Vegas for Cody Glass, the first player drafted in Golden Knights history.
Ellis, 30, has been an integral piece of Nashville’s blueline for the past decade. But injuries have limited his action over the past four seasons, breaking the 50-game barrier once after playing a full 2018-19 season. If healthy, Ellis should become a key two-way figure in Philadelphia, but his health is the key point right now.
In Myers, the Preds get a young defenseman that seemed to fall out of favor in Philly, but should have an opportunity for ice time in Smashville. The big 6-foot-5, 209-pound defender has two seasons left on his deal at $2.55 million and while he won’t create a ton of offense, he’ll be a nice physical piece on Nashville’s blueline.
If anyone needed a change of scenery, it was Patrick. Patrick never was able to live up to his potential after getting selected second overall in 2017, missing all of 2019-20 and recording just nine points in 2020-21. In Vegas, Patrick could slot into the team’s third-line center role. Glass himself seemed out of favor in Vegas, splitting time between the NHL and AHL this year and having not played a full season of pro hockey over the past two seasons. In Nashville, a team looking for scoring, he should be able to get significant ice time.
