Goldberg is reportedly on his way back to WWE according to Fightful Select (h/t Wrestling Inc) as WWE looks to return to live crowds in a big way. Plans reportedly call for Goldberg to face current WWE champion Bobby Lashley at SummerSlam from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.

Yesterday, WWE insider account @WrestleVotes reported that WWE had some “cool and exciting things” planned for its first weekend back in front of fans and to “expect a surprise or two.” While it’s still unclear whether Goldberg will be one of those surprises right away, Becky Lynch has already been linked to a possible return this weekend as WWE’s days of utilizing skeleton-crew-rosters seem to finally be behind them.

Goldberg last appeared in a match against Drew McIntyre at the 2021 Royal Rumble in a losing effort. Coming off record-low viewership from both Raw and SmackDown during a bloodbath of a July 4 weekend, WWE is in desperate need of star power. But with Goldberg (Age: 54), The Rock (49), John Cena (44) and Brock Lesnar (44) all beginning to surface as possible return candidates—with Edge (47) pursuing the Universal Championship this Sunday at Money in the Bank—WWE is simply going back to what it knows in what has become a decade-long trend of relying on part-time stars.

To be fair, WWE has made somewhat admirable efforts to promote new talent of late. Damian Priest is being positioned for a United States Championship run against Sheamus, Riddle is progressively breaking WWE’s glass ceiling on Raw opposite Randy Orton and Big E has risen to the top of the odds as a Money in the Bank favorite.

And while Friday will mark the beginning of a new era for WWE, the more things change, the more things stay the same when it comes to the promotion’s over-reliance on names from the past.

Bobby Lashley vs. Brock Lesnar has long-since been a dream match in the eyes of many fans, and for Bobby himself, but with that match once again appearing to evade him, Goldberg is the next best thing to the next big thing. Though Goldberg is not the undefeated monster he was at his peak in WCW, a win over the legendary star still carries weight, and a matchup between the two titans is certainly blockbuster.

Coming off a surprise loss to Xavier Woods on Raw, and a go-home promo where Lashley destroyed the MVP lounge, a squash match win over Kofi Kingston seems more likely than ever with Goldberg trending towards getting a second WWE Championship match in his last two matches.
