Fast and Furious 9 follows Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) facing his demons as the past comes back to haunt him. There is one notable absence in the movie however, with Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) one of very few family members not to return.

After the announcement of two more finale movies for the Fast and Furious franchise, could this mean we are also done with Hobbs and Shaw?

There are some spoilers ahead for Fast and Furious 9.

Dwayne Johnson has confirmed he will be returning in a second Hobbs and Shaw film, the first of which saw his character Hobbs and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) work together to defeat a common enemy.

While the movie is definitely happening, there may be quite a wait.

Producer Kelly McCormick told Collider: “Everybody’s really busy on that [Fast and Furious] particular franchise.

“I mean, who’s busier than Dwayne Johnson? And, he’s critical to the project.

“We’re just waiting to hear, to be honest. I think it’s something that would be awesome to continue, but I think everybody’s just been so busy working on projects in the COVID of it all, that we’re still waiting to hear…

“There’s a lot of excitement to try to make something.”

A couple of months after this, fellow producer Hiram Garcia told Comicbook.com: “For us, we 100% want to do our part: continue to tell that story, ride with Hobbs.

“We’re full steam ahead on that, we’ve got a great story, a big fun story… I’m real excited [about] where it’s going but we’ll continue to push along.

“We know fans wanted it, that first one, was received really well and so that’s what we needed to know, that the fans wanted more, so we’re going to deliver it.”

It seems the wheels are turning on the project, but evidently the eyes are currently on the Fast and Furious finale, which will be shown across two movies.

It is likely both Statham and Johnson will be called up to take part in these films, given Statham appeared in a cameo in the post-credit scene of F9.

Speaking to Collider, Statham said he is keen to be involved in the finale, as well as another Hobbs and Shaw spin-off.

He said: “Hundreds of millions get spent on making the movie and promoting the movie [Hobbs and Shaw], so they have to have a good script.

“We’re motivated to do something about that; we’re waiting for the knock on the door, essentially…

“I’d love to come back for those couple of movies [Fast and Furious finale].

“It’s thin ice that I’m skating on if I talk about what’s going to happen in the next movies.

“But I know Justin Lin, I know him really well, and it was funny, when I came on to do the cameo in 6, he never turned up to 7 and 8, and they’re the ones that I did, so we’re destined to do something bigger.

“It’s great to work with Vin and all the other characters, I’ve made some great friends on that movie, and I really love the film franchise itself.

“I think it’s a global success for all the right reasons. To be a part of it is just a great privilege. So if they want me in the next ones, I’ll be there.”

Johnson has not been vocal about the Fast and Furious finales, or even whether Hobbs would return to those movies, but some believe Vin Diesel may have let the cat out of the bag.

He posted an image of himself as Dom Toretto, his Fast and Furious character, with Luke Hobbs in the background.

With it, the caption read: “Blessed to be a part of so many iconic moments in film… I don’t reflect on them as much as I should.

“Maybe because I am too excited for what’s coming. Haha. All love. #happytorettotuesday #F9 #F10endofsaga.”

Some have interpreted this as confirmation of Hobbs’ return to Fast and Furious, but as his producer mentioned, Johnson is an incredibly busy man.

This year, Johnson has his self-produced Disney adventure movie Jungle Cruise coming out, as well as Ryan Reynolds-led Free Guy and Red Notice, which he also produced.

In 2022 his DC movie Black Adam will be coming out, as well as DC League of Super-Pets, an animated film where he voices the main character, Superman’s dog.

That’s not to mention movies related to other franchises, such as the Jumanji reboots, and his TV series Young Rock, a biographical series, and sport competition series Titan Games.

For now, fans can enjoy the return of Fast and Furious with the ninth film of this side of the franchise, and re-watch the first Hobbs and Shaw spin-off.
