Toby Greene on report for jumper punch against Carlton

GWS fans will be nervous after stand-in captain Toby Greene was put on report for an off-the-ball jumper punch on Carlton’s Nic Newman in the third quarter of their Round 14 clash.

Greene was reported for striking Newman in the stomach and will come under scrutiny from Match Review Officer Michael Christian.

“Behind play, a bit of the old sucker punch to Nic Newman,” Western Bulldogs great Luke Darcy said in commentary on Channel 7.

“He’s capable of a brain fade, it’d be fair to say.”

If found guilty, the incident will be assessed as intentional and to the body.

The AFL release its match review findings on Sunday night.

“If he got suspended I wouldn’t be unhappy because we want that action rubbed out of our game,” four-time premiership player Jordan Lewis said on Fox Footy.

Greene has a history with the MRO and tribunal.

He has copped total fines of more than $26,000 and been suspended for seven matches.

The livewire forward could also be in trouble for touching the umpire shortly after he was reported for the hit on Newman.

“You can see he’s going past the umpire and just a little innocuous touch of the umpire as well,” Darcy told on Channel 7.

“Almost an acknowledgment that he’s been reported.”

“I think if you’re going to have a safe Saturday night, you’re best keeping your hands off the men officiating,” Richmond great Matthew Richardson said in commentary.

Greene was involved in everything, kicking four goals including a massive torpedo launched from the centre square after the quarter-time siren had sounded.

The Giants had the better of the game and led by 30 points at the main break before Carlton trimmed the margin to 18 points at three-quarter time.

The Blues mounted a comeback in the final quarter but it was too little, too late.

GWS ran out 36-point winners to move to ninth on the AFL ladder and keep their finals hopes alive.

There was a lot to like for the Giants, who had plenty of contributors as they boosted their finals chances, with Jacob Hopper, Isaac Cumming, Lachie Whitfield and Tim Taranto all prominent on the ball with Jeremy Finlayson booting five goals.

Matt de Boer was sent to young star Sam Walsh for the first three quarters and the master tagger took the honours before the hard tag was released late.
