Gareth Southgate was left frustrated by England’s goalless draw with Scotland after a night where the Three Lions struggled to create.

Southgate watched on as his team desperately sought the breakthrough but they were unable to find a way past a stubborn Scotland.

The England manager shuffled his pack throughout the contest, bringing on the likes of Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford in a bid to unlock the Scottish defence but they had to settle for a point at Wembley.

Arguably the biggest surprise of the night came when Southgate took off Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, replacing him with Rashford, and the England boss explained why he withdrew his skipper despite him being one of the nation’s most potent goal threats.

‘I just felt that we needed a few more runs in behind,’ said Southgate.

‘I felt Marcus would give us that energy and needed to try to get the win at that poin.t

‘We have to make these decisions based on what we see.

‘I think the whole team can look at ourselves and we can start with me.

‘We didn’t do enough to win the game tonight, not enough attempts on goal so that’s something we’re going to go away and look at over the next couple of days

‘I think we are still working those patterns playing a high number of games at high intensity. Scotland defended really well.’
