Richard Madeley stuns GMB viewers as he compares ISIS bride Shamima Begum to Hitler Youth

Good Morning Britain viewers have today compared host Richard Madeley to Alan Partridge after he likened ISIS bride Shamima Begum to the Hitler Youth.

Viewers say the presenter went ‘full Partridge’ during the astonishing segment on the ITV show today.

The show had been discussing whether Begum, who left the UK aged 15, to join the terrorist group ISIS, should be allowed back.  

But, as the debate closed, Madeley, 65, stunned viewers with a short monologue comparing her situation to that of members of the Hitler Youth.

The presenter said the Allies had ‘not gone after’ young members of the organisation – the Nazi party’s youth wing – after defeating the fascist group in the Second World Ward. 

The comparison, and its delivery, sparked Twitter users to liken Madeley to Alan Partridge – the tactless television presenter created by comedian Steve Coogan.

One Twitter user said: ‘Am I the only person thirlled that Richard Madeley is now presenting Good Morning Britain because I’m craving some new Partridge?

Another said: ‘If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then Richard Madeley must be one hell of an Alan Partridge fan.

Another, comedian David Baddiel, said: ‘One day I would quite like to see Steve Coogan do a bit called “Alan Partridge reads out Richard Madeley’s best lines”.’

Meanwhile, others praised the cool and calm reaction of Susanna Reid, who managed to keep a straight face during the Madeley’s monologue.

Stand for All chief, Daniel Sohege, said: ‘Uhm, what now? How Susanna Reid keeps it together during this is beyond me. What point is Madeley trying to make here?’

But others praised the comparison, saying: ‘Here’s a spicy hot take you’re sure to enjoy on a Wednesday morning… Richard Madeley’s point about the Hitley Youth is actually quite an astute and relevant observation on the Shamima Begum situation.’ 

The flurry of Partridge comparisons came after Madeley let loose his thoughts on the Begum row.

Speaking after the debate with quests on GMB today, he said: ‘There’s one interesting point, and I was thinking about this last night.

‘Obviously we had the Nuremberg Trials after the war, and we hanged quite a few Nazis and imprisoned a lot of others, who we let out eventually… but we didn’t go after the Hitler Youth, as far as I’m aware.

‘We didn’t go after the Hitler Youth, we only went after adults who had served in the Hitler regime… and that’s just something to reflect on.’

The Hitler Youth were the youth organisation of the Nazi party and, from 1936 until 1945, was the official youth organisation of Germany.

The group consisted of ‘Aryan’ male youths aged 14 to 18. It was part of the wider Nazi children’s network, which began with young boys being introduced into the German Young People group at the age of 13.

During their time in the Hitler Youth, boys lived a spartan-esk life of dedication, fellowship, and Nazi conformity, generally with minimum parental guidance. 

The comparison to Begum is due to her age at the time she left the UK to become an ISIS bride.

Begum was 15 when she left her London home with two friends to fly out to Syria and join the terrorist group as brides.

After the defeat of ISIS, Begum was found in a refugee camp in 2019 and said she wanted to return to the UK.

However then-home secretary Sajid Javid stripped her of her citizenship on security grounds, and she has been fighting to return to the UK ever-since.

Campaigners who support her return often argue that she should be allowed back as she was 15 at the time when she left the UK to join the terrorist cult.

The Government argues that it is not safe for her to return to the UK.
