Cambridge United midfielder Paul Digby has penned a new two-year contract with the club.

The 26-year-old made 41 appearances for United in all competitions, making an important contribution to the side’s promotion to League One.

The central midfielder has now committed his future to the U’s, having been out of contract this summer.

Digby expressed his joy at being part of United’s squad moving forward.

“It is what I wanted,” Digby said.

“I am delighted to have signed and be a part of this football club for another two years.

“I am grateful that the club have offered me the deal and put their faith in me to help move the club forward into League One.”

The Sheffield-born midfielder will enter his second season with the U’s, having joined the club last summer.

United are Digby’s sixth club of his career, having started out at Championship side Barnsley.

Spells at Ipswich Town, Mansfield Town, Forest Green Rovers and Stevenage followed, before the midfielder made the move to the U’s.

“Paul played an integral role in our season and adds character, physical presence and aggression to the team,” head coach Mark Bonner added.

“His leadership is vital to us and he has a resilience that drives standards.

“He is as excited about the step up in leagues as we are and he is determined to prove himself at the next level. It is that mindset sweeping through the squad that will focus us for the new season.

“Paul organises and encourages people superbly, he breaks up play well and has good understanding defensively.

“He has played a good number of games already in his career and with his best years ahead of him, we are looking forward to helping him develop further as a player and as a direct influence on our team.”

Digby is the sixth player to have signed new terms for the upcoming campaign.

Dimi Mitov, Greg Taylor, Harrison Dunk and Liam O’Neil have all signed new contracts, whilst Leon Davies has accepted a short-term deal at the club.

Those six players join a further six players who were already contracted heading into the new season, whilst Adam May has had a contract option triggered.

As things stand, the club have contract offers outstanding for Kyle Knoyle, Luke Hannant, Paul Mullin, Andy Dallas and Ben Worman, whilst discussions are ongoing with Wes Hoolahan.
