Claude “Steve” Gray age 69, of Greenfield, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021. He was born in Indianapolis on February 21, 1952 to Calvin C. Gray and Claudine H. (Hanna) Gray. He graduated from Eastern Hancock High School in 1970 and attended Ball State University and Purdue University. During the Vietnam War, he served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1974 and was honored with the National Defense Medal. He married Crystal “Chris” (Hawkins) Gray on December 7, 1974 in Shirley, Indiana.

Steve worked as a carpenter for Allison Transmission in Indianapolis for over 30 years. He also worked as a corrections officer for Hancock County Corrections for 13 years. He was a member of the UAW and Mohawk United Methodist Church. Steve was an active volunteer within his church. In his free time, he enjoyed reading, golfing, and working on projects. Steve loved spending time with his family and traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Chris Gray of Greenfield; sons, David J. (Mandy) Gray of Greenfield and Jacob R. Gray of Greenfield; father, Calvin Gray; grandchildren, Grace and Grant Gray; brother, Calvin L. “Bud” (Jeannine) Gray of Shirley; sisters, Cheryl (Tom) King of McCordsville and Carla (Mick) Ireton of Fort Wayne; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Claudine Gray and infant brother, Jeff Gray.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 5:00 p.m. Reverend Kerry O’Brien and Reverend Mike Manning will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by mail to Suburban Hospice, Inc., 801 N State St, Greenfield, IN 46140 or envelopes will be available at the mortuary. Friends may share a memory or condolence at www.erleweinmortuary.com.
