A-level and GCSE pupils in England will receive the grades predicted by their teachers in a government climbdown after days of criticism, The Times has been told.

The change means that GCSE pupils will automatically get their teacher-assessed grades this Thursday. It is not yet clear what the process will be for withdrawing the A-level grades already allocated to pupils and replacing them with their teachers’ assessments, which are often higher. But the source said they expected this to be done “as soon as possible”.

An announcement is due at 4pm after 36 hours of crisis talks between the exams regulator, Ofqual, and the government.
